- Don’t walk on it. The grass will be excessively brittle from it being frozen. Encourage foot traffic around it if at all possible.
- Make sure you have adequate drainage throughout the winter. Moisture buildup from winter’s mixed bag of precipitation can provide an opportunity for fungus, insects, and mold to wreak havoc on your lawn in the spring.
- Clear your lawn of debris after the first snow melts. Fortunately, early season snow rarely sticks around long. Clear any debris that you find beneath the snow. This will ensure that anything that gets left on the ground in future storms will not leave you with dead spots in spring. This especially important for large patches of fallen leaves.
- Don’t let the snow pile up. Thick snow piles can provide a place for the disease called snow mold to grow. Try to clear out large piles of snow built up on grass to prevent this.
- Clearly mark where your lawn begins and ends with driveway markers. This will prevent damage to your lawn from plows and shoveling. If this has already occurred, try to repair the damage before the next storm.
