5 Tips for Hanging Holiday Lights Safely

Holiday light services are one of the more popular choices for landscapers to make revenue in the winter. Hanging lights can be quite the challenge and some homeowners would simply rather pay someone else to do it. If you are offering holiday light hanging services, there are several safety precautions you and your fleet should be aware of. A lot of light hanging involves ladder use which can be dangerous when you are dealing with icy and cold winter weather. If you are offering holiday service this year, consider these 5 tips for hanging holiday lights safely.

5 Tips for Hanging Holiday Lights Safely

  1. Check the weather before you book your service date with your client. You’ll want to try to schedule the service on a day that the weather is good. There shouldn’t be any high winds, ice, or heavy snow. If you have already booked the service and the weather is bad prior to that date, be very watchful for slippery spots on the roof. You can even request that the client clean the area of ice before you get there.
  2. Practice ladder safety all the time. Check your ladder to make sure it is sturdy ahead of time and don’t go over the weight limit of the ladder. It is also a good idea to have a coworker hold the ladder while working. Make sure they are holding the ladder at all times while someone is climbing it.
  3. Be very careful if and when you are climbing on the client’s roof. Crawl on all fours if possible and wear shoes that are non slip. Watch where you step and avoid any spots that look slippery or unsafe.
  4. Use caution when using tools to attach the lights. Staple and nail guns don’t mix with electrical cords. A better and safer option is to use plastic light hangers that can be reused and don’t require tools to use.
  5. Make sure you’re using the proper lights for outdoor usage. Outdoor lights burn hotter than indoor lights. They also are better insulated to withstand harsh winter weather. If your client is having you hang lights indoors, make sure they are indoor lights. You don’t want to inadvertently cause a fire in their house.
